Comics: 1st July 2026 Read List

Hoping to (fairly) regularly take a look at some of the comic books I’ve read. The below comics were all available to UK readers on 1st July 2026.

X-Men Outback Issue 1

Marvel Comics.

I missed this last week but picked it up this week. It’s 80’s X-Men, just after “Fall of the Mutants” with the team based in Australia, and the world believing the X-Men to be dead.

A period where Colossus showed his artistic side whilst dealing with the aftermath of Mutant Massacre. Rogue and Dazzler seem to dislike each other, regularly arguing over Longshot.

The first issue brings readers that may have missed Fall of the Mutants / the original 80’s X-Men run up to speed with why the X-Men are in Australia and then brings in a X-Men villain to torment the team.

I enjoyed the nostalgia. Not sure how many stories can be fit into this period without having to repeat similar “fixes” to characters forgetting about the X-Men not being dead but a good first issue.

Fantastic Four Issue 13

Marvel Comics.

Guest starring Ghost Rider (kinda).

A fun issue where the Human Torch works with the Invisible Woman to tackle some of the Fantastic Four’s foes before they commit crimes.

The current FF fun has been good and balanced family adventures with cosmic threats such as the “Invincible Woman”. This issue is more in the light hearted column but that is a good thing.

Only downside for me was some of the art around The Wizard’s face, it felt a little light on detail.

Avengers JLA Issue 2

DC Comics / Marvel Comics.

It’s been over 20 years (ouch! I feel old) and DC Comics / Marvel Comics are in the process of releasing facsimile editions of Avengers / JLA.

I enjoyed the original release and I feel like the story / art holds up in 2026.

Two cosmic level characters (one DC, one Marvel) are having a games contest with the heroes of the two universes used as pawns whilst going after powerful artefacts from both universes. But is all as it seems?

Batman and Captain America face off. Thor and Superman battle. Flash and Quicksilver show their speediness. And Scarlet Witch feels the chaos magic of the DC Universe.

Summer of Supergirl Special Issue 1

DC Comics.

It’s the summer of Supergirl, with her movie hitting cinema screens and DC giving Kara a special one shot. Which isn’t really a one shot as it kind of follows on from an issue of Lobo which also guest starred Supergirl.

It’s a three story issue that guest stars other members of the “Super” family and also a member of the “Marvel” family.

I’m not a regular reader of Supergirl, or Lobo, so was not sure what is happening in her main title and that “kind of follows on” could have been a concern but the special deals with it really well. The special is welcoming, brings readers up to speed and delivers three stories that show off different aspects of Supergirl’s character well.

Personally I thought the 2nd story was the hightlight as it saw Supergirl and a member of the Marvel family take on a robot.

Here is hoping that the summer of Supergirl is a success (both comics-wise and movie-wise).

2000AD Prog 2489

2000AD.

For those new to 2000AD, it’s a weekly anthology of stories. I’m just going to pick one story per issue I look at.

Judge Dredd: The Oubliette Part 7

Judge Dredd is dealing with the Oubliette. Dredd has found himself in what I can only describe as a Dante’s Inferno. Stripped of the outfit that may represent the character or the law (maybe taking him back to basics?), Dredd is making his way up a structure fighting and brawling. Characters from the past have been appearing, and Dredd has met death a few times only to be regenerated back on lower levels in previous issues. 2000AD have marketed the Oubliette story as a horror, and even released the prelude for free at: https://2000ad.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/oublietteprelude.pdf

However, I’m wondering if the action is less physically happening and more psychologically happening to Dredd. Dredd has lost his suit, tried to earn it back and is being visited by characters from the past. I could be very wrong though, and this may be a hell like structure that Dredd is progressing through.
